It's hard to say if it is truly a question of national economics or if it more of a issue of national vanity, but I can say that I am stunned at the amount of attention that is focused on this topic.
The following lines appeared on the State's guide to pregnancy and were repeated in about five different sections, "Pregnancy is a time for you to eat twice as well, NOT TWICE AS MUCH" and "Most women eat for two when they are not pregnant, so don't get any ideas about starting to eat for four just because you are pregnant."
My doctor's office also had a thing or two to say about weight gain. Their list of Dos and Don'ts clearly stated their position, "This office considers 'cravings' to be a myth and they will not be tolerated or recognized as an excuse for excessive weight gain."
Gotcha.
Gotcha.

Things are pretty much the same over here in Slovenia too... the first thing you do when you come to the doc is step on a scale... I always felt like a piece of meat... and then if it was just a little too much, there were endless suggestions from my doc that that isn't good, etc, etc, etc... Hmmmm... if I am not mistaken, I am the one who carries that extra weight and I am the one who will be trying to get rid of it after the baby is out....
btw - enjoy the chocolate now, as much as you can - cause when you breastfeed you cannot eat it for a few months... together with a long, long list of many other goodies...
You are so right Tina! I was just having a laugh with my mother this weekend about coffee. I told her that it seems wiser to enjoy a nice cup of espresso now when I don't mind if the baby is awake and making noise, than to have coffee while I am breast feeding and have a baby who wants to stay up all night and party!!
Oh, Mary. I will not tolerate my craving to slap tsk'ing doctors in the face.
